Pumpkin Drinks

An image of Silk Pumpkin Spice Soymilk.
One of my favorite seasonal ingredients is pumpkin. Although we often think of pumpkin in food form (pumpkin pie, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bread, etc.), pumpkin drinks are another wonderful way to enjoy the flavor of pumpkins in fall.

Many people have tried seasonal pumpkin beers or pumpkin cocktails (assembled in a fantastic collection on About.com Cocktails), but there are also other types of pumpkin drinks worth checking out.

I like this Pumpkin Pie Latte Recipe from a former About.com Coffee / Tea guide, whose Pumpkin Pie Coffee Creamer Recipe is also popular.

If you have kids, be sure to try this kid-friendly Pumpkin Smoothies Recipe.

And, if you don't want to make your own pumpkin drinks, you can buy Silk Pumpkin Spice Soy Milk (pictured above) at many grocery stores during the fall.

Grey Goose L'Orange Pumpkin Carver

Pumpkin cocktails are always favored in the fall and winter, especially for Halloween and Thanksgiving. One thing I've noticed amongst the pumpkin drinks of late, is that they are using pumpkin butter, which is the case in this Pumpkin Carver. The butter is one of the best and easiest ways to get a rich pumpkin flavor in drinks and is readily available in groceries and natural food stores. Orange (via the vodka in this case) is a great flavor to mix with pumpkin and you'll also notice ginger and maple - two other favorite fall flavors - are added to the mix. It's a delightful, very autumnal drink that is delicious,

Pumpkin Martini

The Pumpkin Martini has long been a favorite cocktail for fall. Although it has recently become difficult, well impossible, to find pumpkin schnapps or any pumpkin liqueur. Until another pumpkin liqueur comes on the market again you can substitute pumpkin spice syrup or pumpkin puree. You might also want to check out the Pumpkin Spice Martini, the Pumpkin Divine or the Calabatini.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 oz Sylk Cream Liqueur
  • 2 oz vanilla vodka
  • 1/2 oz pumpkin liqueur or pumpkin spice syrup
  • 1 tsp whipped cream
  • cinnamon stick for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Pour the Sylk Liqueur and vodka into a shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Add the pumpkin liqueur or syrup.
  4. Shake again.
  5. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  6. Top with a teaspoon of whipped cream.
  7. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Pumpkin Cocktails

Jun 11 2011

Every autumn, as innate tastes change with the season, people seek out pumpkin flavored cocktails. It is a unique flavor in a cocktail and, while not the most versatile, can be found in everything from a variety of pumpkin martinis to punches that are perfect for the holidays.

To get the pumpkin into your cocktails you have a few options including pumpkin butter, pumpkin syrup, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin puree, or pumpkin liqueur and the list below includes each. For any of these pumpkin pie spice could be lightly sprinkled on top of the drink (such as you would with nutmeg) for a seasonal garnish. Also, at the bottom you will find a few food recipes with pumpkin and liquor.

Pumpkin-flavored Cocktails:
These drinks use either fresh pumpkin (seeds or flesh) or a pumpkin butter or syrup (such as Monin), or a pumpkin spice.

Pumpkin Liquor Cocktails:
Rarely can you find a pumpkin-flavored liquor because it is a very seasonal flavor and because of this few liquor companies take on the challenge. However, a few do and some come and go with the exception being Hiram Walker Pumpkin Spice Liqueur, which is relatively easy to find in the fall and winter (at least as of 2009). One of my favorites is Modern Spirit's seasonal Pumpkin Pie Vodka

"Spiked" Pumpkin Food Recipes:
Baking with both pumpkin and distilled spirits can create some fantastic foods and these few recipes prove that.
