Ginger Love "Tea" Review

Ginger is a popular ingredient in many foods and drinks. It is commonly used to make ginger tea, which sometimes refers to tea with ginger and sometimes refers to a ginger tisane.

I recently had the opportunity to taste an instant ginger "tea" called Ginger Love. Ginger Love is a caffeine-free, powdered drink that compares favorably to most instant drinks on the market, and is naturally refreshing thanks to its core ingredients of ginger and citrus.

Spring Fling: Ginger Tea

Continuing with the spring fling drinks, I think it is time to revive an "older" drink that fits the bill perfectly and is an excellent example of bridging the gap between winter and summer. The cocktail of the day, then, is the Hennessy Ginger Tea.

It has been three years now since I was first introduced to this but it remains a favorite because of how it marries cognac with herbs. The main ingredients of the drink are Hennessey VSOP, chilled green tea, and fresh mint and ginger. The result is one of the most refreshing brandy drinks you will find, complete with snappy flavors that enliven the taste buds. It is simple, yes, and those drinks are some of our favorites.

Ginger Lemonade

Fresh ginger gives traditional lemonade a new flavour. Be careful though, the ginger is a very potent ingredient. Ginger lemonade goes well with a summer lunch of Asian cuisine.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups lemon juice
  • 4 quarts water
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 14 slices of fresh ginger

Preparation:

Put water, sugar and ginger root together in a saucepan and heat until boiling. Remove from heat and stir in 4 cups of lemon juice (fresh or bottled). Let it sit and cool for about 20 minutes or so, then remove the ginger root pieces. Chill your ginger lemonade before serving.

Sliced ginger will make strong lemonade, but if you really like the ginger taste, you could chop it into smaller pieces for more flavour. Just make sure to strain your lemonade well before serving.

Knob Creek Sour Ginger

The inevitable has come, September is here. To kick off the month, Labor Day weekend, and National Bourbon Heritage Month, we have a great whiskey to talk about and a great cocktail to go along with it.

The whiskey is nothing new or innovative, but that doesn't mean it is fantastic and one of our all time favorites. It is the reliable Knob Creek. Okay, so there was a time just 2 years ago when there was a shortage and that was due to the distiller's insistence that no shortcuts be taken when demand outgrew supply. Beyond that little incident, Knob Creek is always there for you with the same robust flavor and the same satisfying finish. As Lance Mayhew put it in his review: "Simply put, Knob Creek is one of the greatest whiskies in the world and an iconic bourbon." It is, according to Fred Noe of Jim Beam, a taste of pre-prohibition bourbon, rather fitting for this month that celebrates the heritage of America's favorite whiskey.

So, the revelry aside, Mayhew has a new cocktail that features this bourbon great. It is the Knob Creek Sour Ginger and from the looks of the recipe, it will make one doozy of an end of summer, long weekend drink.? It just sounds good: Knob Creek, Domaine de Canton ginger, grapefruit, and lemon. The best part in my book is the garnish of a lime wedge stuffed with candied ginger. I've been using the sweetened ginger for garnishes lately but I had not thought of stuffing it into a lime. Interesting. Anyway, it will make a fantastic drink for whatever festivities you have planned this weekend, so enjoy!
