The inevitable has come, September is here. To kick off the month, Labor Day weekend, and National Bourbon Heritage Month, we have a great whiskey to talk about and a great cocktail to go along with it.
The whiskey is nothing new or innovative, but that doesn't mean it is fantastic and one of our all time favorites. It is the reliable Knob Creek. Okay, so there was a time just 2 years ago when there was a shortage and that was due to the distiller's insistence that no shortcuts be taken when demand outgrew supply. Beyond that little incident, Knob Creek is always there for you with the same robust flavor and the same satisfying finish. As Lance Mayhew put it in his review: "Simply put, Knob Creek is one of the greatest whiskies in the world and an iconic bourbon." It is, according to Fred Noe of Jim Beam, a taste of pre-prohibition bourbon, rather fitting for this month that celebrates the heritage of America's favorite whiskey.
So, the revelry aside, Mayhew has a new cocktail that features this bourbon great. It is the Knob Creek Sour Ginger and from the looks of the recipe, it will make one doozy of an end of summer, long weekend drink.? It just sounds good: Knob Creek, Domaine de Canton ginger, grapefruit, and lemon. The best part in my book is the garnish of a lime wedge stuffed with candied ginger. I've been using the sweetened ginger for garnishes lately but I had not thought of stuffing it into a lime. Interesting. Anyway, it will make a fantastic drink for whatever festivities you have planned this weekend, so enjoy!
