Pear Cocktails

Jun 11 2011

Fresh Pears, Pear Juice, Pear Nectar, etc.
Just like all fruit, the pear can come in many forms. Fresh pears can be difficult to work with in a drink, but the fruit's juice and nectar are great alternatives and can be found in almost any supermarket. When making substitutions, remember that pear nectar is going to be sweeter, thicker, and slightly grainier than the juice and you should adjust the ratio accordingly. Then again, many fine pear-flavored drinks can be enhanced with nectar. Experiment and see what you enjoy most.

Cocktails with Pear Flavored Spirits:
As pear becomes a more popular cocktail flavor there are more pear flavored spirits available on the market. A few brands distribute a pear liqueurs, which vary in sweetness and fruit intensity. A more contemporary trend is pear-flavored vodka (see below for homemade versions). These, such Grey Goose La Poire and Absolut Pears, are ideal for turning the average vodka cocktail into a fruity delight. Note that as you look at bottle labels, you will often see poire, which is French for "pear."

Homemade Pear Spirits:
The pear is an excellent fruit for creating your own infusions from your favorite spirits.
